Chapter 9

Daniel was sure that if he took one more step, the bridge would snap. He tried not to think about falling into quickmud and being stuck there while the ocean tide covered him.

He held his breath, listening for another creak. Faint crackles sounded from the bamboo under his feet.

“It’s okay,” Joy called. “Keep going.”

“It won’t hold me!” he told her. “You two use the bridge. I’ll swim across once the tide rises.”

“What if it doesn’t get high enough to swim?” Kimani said. “You’ll get stuck.”

“It’s worth a try,” he said.

“No, it’s not.” Joy pointed at the ocean. “Look!”

“Maybe that’s not a shark fin. Maybe it’s a—a something else!” Kimani said, talking fast, like she was nervous. “Or maybe, maybe the shark is more afraid of you than you are of it!”

“It’s not more afraid of me!” Daniel hollered at her. “I am definitely more afraid of the shark.”

CREAK! The bridge jerked under him again.

“Come back!” Joy bellowed. “Run!”

Daniel ran.

Sharks! His heart pounded in his chest, fast as a drumroll, as his mind screamed. Sharks, sharks, sharks…

As he raced back toward Kimani and Joy, the bridge swayed and shook. His vision narrowed and—

CRACK!
